Once in a Blue Moon
Jenn: We had a supermoon blue moon phenomenon across the globe just recently on August 30. I took this picture from my neighbor’s front balcony.
Taro: What’s a supermoon blue moon, Jenn?
Jenn: Well, it was the second full moon in August, which made it a blue moon by definition and it was also a supermoon which means it was directly opposite the sun and thus fully illuminated. We won’t see another one of these combos until 2037. This blue moon in August was the last full moon of the summer. I saw the supermoon but I couldn’t capture it on my iphone camera. It was gorgeous though.
Taro; Oh. Well, I wasn’t available then. I was in the little hidey hole tent you made me.
Jenn: Yes you were. Astrology experts say the supermoon blue moon is a wonderful opportunity to get clarity about what you want and to let go of what is no longer serving you.
Taro: I’m good. I can’t think of anything for me. What about you?
Jenn: Yes, well, I have to think about this a little more for myself, but I wanted to say that the phrase “once in a blue moon” has different origins, but I’m going to apply it here to you in a particular way.
Taro: To me? Why? What did I do? What do you mean?
Jenn: “Once in a blue moon” emphasizes that something is done rarely. Not often at all. For example, I was thinking that a cat goes into a Zen Buddhist monastery once in a blue moon. It was so rare for you to engage Gennan Roshi and ask for permission to study with him. As a cat, I mean.
Taro: I wasn’t thinking about anything, really, at that time except that I desperately wanted and needed to enter the monastery and train with Roshi.
Jenn: Yes, it was a rare phenomenon, a cat asking permission to enter a Zen monastery. It was a once in a blue moon adventure for you.
Taro: But it was so much fun! Can I have another experience like that soon, Jenn? A once in a blue moon adventure?
Jenn: I suppose anything I write you into would have the possibility of being rare and unusual.
Taro: That’s what I love about you, Jenn. Always thinking outside the box.
Jenn: You flatter me too much.
Taro: Actually, I’d like you to think more inside the box right now.
Jenn: What?
Taro: Jenn! You see that box over there on the kitchen counter filled with yummy cat snacks inside? Stop looking at me like that. You know where I’m going with this.
